Rai was born in Mangalore to Krishnaraj and Vrinda Rai, in the southern Indian state of Karnataka, Tulu is her mother tongue.
Rai, attend the Holy Vidya Mandir at Santa Cruz, Mumbai, then entered Jai Hind College, Churchgate, Mumbai for one year and then moved to Ruparel College, Matunga, Mumbai to get her HSC. She was a student and had to be on the way to an architect. Her mother tongue is Tulu. She speaks Hindi, English, Kannada, Marathi and Tamil.
• In 1994 Miss India contest Rai remained in second place behind Sushmita Sen, and went to the Miss World title win.
As a professional model Rai acted in many Indian fashion magazines, including the Indian Vogue; recently, she appeared in international ads for L'Oreal, De Beers Diamonds, and Coca-Cola.
• The first movie she acted in the popular Tamil movie Iruvar in (1997), directed by Mani Ratnam. Rai earliest films money, but Rai did not impress critics - they commented that her performances were stilted, as if she still modeling.

Her breakthrough came with Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s film Hum Dil De Chuk Sanam. Later successes include Taal and Devdas. Rai has acted in other Tamil films such as Jeans, Kandukondain Kandukondain and the Bengali film Chokher Bali.

Devdas, in which Aishwarya ,Shah Rukh Khan and Bollywood superstar Madhuri Dixit, was a huge hit, lavishly produced, as it was. The film, as well as overseas attention was given to a special show at the Cannes Film Festival.

• Rai is still an international star rather than a Bollywood one. In 2003, Rai was a member of the jury at Cannes. In 2004 she was chosen by Time Magazine Asian Edition as one of the Asian "100 most influential people." Rai is the subject of a 60 Minutes profile on second January 2005 - "the most beautiful woman in the world." A month later she appeared on the Late Show with David Letterman, and on April 25, 2005, she was on Oprah's "Women in the World Featured" segment. A figure of Rai had been on display in London's Madame Tussaud's Museum.

Although frequently the subject of gossip column speculation about an imminent Hollywood career, it was only in 2004 that Rai finally acted in a foreign film. British director Gurinder Chadha she put the heroine in Bride and Prejudice, a Hollywood-funded but Bollywood-ested version of the classic novel by Jane Austen, Pride and Prejudice to play. "The film was also increased at the box office and Cameron's Hollywood profile a notch.
