Sania Mirza holds the distinction of being the first Indian woman to be seeded at a Grand Slam tournament in tennis, when she Seeded 26th in 2007 U. S. Open. In early 2005, she become the first Indian woman to reach the fourth round of a Grand Slam tournament at the 2005 U.S. Open, defeating Mashona Washington to reach, Maria Elena Camerin and Marion Bartoli. In 2004 she finished runner-up in the tennis tournament in Asia. In 2005, Mirza,reached third round of the Australian Open, defeated by eventual champion Serena Williams. On 12 February 2005, she was the first Indian woman to win a WTA singles title, defeating Alyona Bondarenko of Ukraine in the Hyderabad Open finals.

Mirza won the doubles title of the 2003 Wimbledon Championships Girls' teaming up with Alisa Kleybanova of Russia. Mirza not like playing on sand. Her best performance at the French Open singles has a second round appearance in 2007.

In 2007, U.S. Open reached the third round before losing to Anna Chakvetadze for the third time in recent weeks.She went much better in doubles and reached the quarterfinals in mixed doubles with her partner Mahesh Bhupathi and the quarterfinals in doubles with Bethanie Mattek of the women, including an impressive victory over number two seeds Lisa Raymond and Samantha Stosur.

She represented India at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, but had to give up injured in the first round.

Mirza took her first Grand Slam title at the 2009 Australian Open. The partnership with Mahesh Bhupathi won the mixed title and defeated Nathalie Dechy (France) and Andy Ram (Israel) 6-3, 6-1 in the final in Melbourne.

She said that two best friends, fellow WTA tour players Anna Chakvetadze and Bethanie Mattek.

Mirza created controversy when he married the former captain of Pakistani cricket Shoaib Malik on April 12, 2010.
